Microsoft is planning on introducing a Movies & TV app to handheld devices running Android and iOS.
For some time now, the Windows OS and Xbox makers has been trying to make sure that their core apps like Edge and Launcher would be available on Android and iOS devices in order to encourage people to use their software and services across platforms. But Microsoft's Movies & TV so far only works on Windows 10 PCs, Xbox and Windows 10 Mobile. That, however, is about to change soon.
Sources close to Microsoft told Windows Central that the company is developing the Movies & TV app for Android and iOS in order that users would continue to buy many of their viewing content from Microsoft Store.
Like Google Play, Microsoft Store has an impressive collection of films and TV shows on sale. Before now the materials can only be accessed through Microsoft own platform, such as, Windows 10 PCs, Xbox and Windows 10 Mobile.
With the new app, you are able to watch films on your PC and then continue on your phone. You would also be able to retrieve videos that you bought from the Microsoft store and then play them on your mobile device, thus freeing you from buying or renting those videos all over again.
This new plan from Microsoft shows that the company has finally given up on the Windows 10 Mobile which has proven to be a flop. Although Microsoft would continue to support the platform with bug fixes and security update, building new features and hardware was no longer the company's focus.
There's no word yet as to when the Movies & TV app will be released, all we know is that it would be very soon.
Tell us what you think of this new initiative from Microsoft.
