Facebook Brings Messenger kids App To Android

Last December, Facebook launched a new chat app called Messenger Kids app on iOS. Now the app has now been brought to Android.

Messenger Kids is exclusively made for younger children (ages 6 to 12) as a way for them to safely communicate with friends and family. The app includes features like video chat, drawing tools, stickers and more.

Parents have strict control over who their kids interact with over the app using their own regular Facebook app, and kids are only able to communicate with people on their parental-approved list. Facebook believes this is much safer than letting kids use other chat platforms that provide little oversight and are harder to monitor and lock down.

However, the Messenger Kids app has already raised eyebrows in some quarters. Some child development experts are calling on Facebook shut down the app. They are worried that the app could affect kids learning and social development since they will be spending more time glued to their handsets than on face-to-face interaction with family and friends.

Moreover, there are also concerns  about the children's security and privacy. Some also fear that kids could be targeted by advertisers.

But Facebook has fervently promised that the Messenger kids app will protect kids privacy and that it’s not going to use a child’s data for advertising purposes.

Do you agree with them? You can share your view in the comments.

Messenger kids app is available for download in Google Play Store.
