Netflix Will Be Blocking Rooted Android Phones From Downloading Its App

News just surface that the popular streaming company, Netflix, will be blocking rooted Android phones from downloading its app newest version.

This means that if you’ve rooted your Android phone, you will no longer be able to download the Netflix’s app from Google Play Store.

In a statement, the video streaming company confirm that “many devices that are not Google-certified or have been altered will no longer work with (their) latest app and those users will no longer see the Netflix app in the Play Store.”

Netflix move may be related to the fact that their latest 5.0 app release fully relies on the Widevine Digital Rights Management (DRM) provided by Google. The purpose of the DRM is to protect media companies from piracy and rooted devices that give users control over the operating system as they have a greater possibility of breaking the protection of the DRM. Netfix may have acted to protect their Copyright materials.

Still it’s troubling that Netflix is making this move even though their actions may seem well-intentioned. Because it can impact negatively on users who rooted their devices simply to be able to control and customize their phones rather than to bypass security measures or pirate TV shows. So it’s clearly not a clever move by Netflix.
However, if you’ve already have the Netflix app installed, the service still works fine.

Additionally, it appears that it’s not just rooted devices that are affected, but even those with unlocked bootloaders are being blocked from downloading the app.

To see if your device is affected, check the Netflix app on the Google Play Store, and you’ll see whether the app is still compatible.
