If you have a computer, you surely know how important backing up files is. For a mobile phone user, this should be a must if you do not want lose precious data when your device is gets missing, spoilt, or worse, stolen. Your backed up data can come in handy when you are switching to a new phone.
You can backup all your data online called a cloud storage. One popular online cloud storage is Google Drive. A good thing about Google Drive is that it is free and you don't need to worry about storage space since it won't count it in your account.
By default, the Google backup service is turned on after you first set up your phone. This automatically backup your contacts, call logs, text messages, calendars, app data, and device settings to Drive, so that you'll be able to restore them to a new phone or to the same phone if you perform a factory reset. You only need to log onto your Google account during initial setup configuration and your data will be synced with your Google account which will then be backed up to Drive.
However, before you switch to a new phone or perform a factory reset, you still need to make sure that your data is already synced and on the cloud. Follow the steps below to see how you can do that.
How to Sync and Backup Data to
Google Drive
Method 1:
- Open Settings app from the drawer or home screen.
- Scroll down and hit Accounts or Users Accounts.
- Choose your Gmail or Google Account if you are signed into more than one account.
- Hit Account sync."
- You will see a list that has your data (contacts, drive, calendar, gmail, people's details) which will be synced with your account. Make sure all their buttons are checked on.
- Tap on the 3-line menu button at the top right.
- Hit Sync now and all your current data will start to synchronise with your Google account, but make sure you are connected.
Method 2:
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down to System and hit it.
- Tap Backup.
- Look for Backup to Google one and make sure the switch is turned on.
- Under Backup details, you will see what will be backed up (apps, photos/videos, sms messages, call history, device settings, and google account data).
- Tap on Google account data.
- You will see a list that has your data (contacts, drive, calendar, gmail, people's details) which will be synced with your account. Make sure all their buttons are checked on.
- Tap on the 3-line menu button at the top right.
- Now hit Sync now. Your current data will start syncing, but make sure you are connected.
Now you need to make sure that all your current data are synced with your account by looking into the apps whose data you want saved. Among them are Contacts, Gmail, and Calendar.
Open the Contacts app. Tap on the 3-line menu button and hit Settings. Next select Google Contacts sync settings. Under Also sync device contacts, tap Manage Settings. Finally, turn on Automatically backup & sync device contacts.

Open your Gmail app. Tap on the three vertical lines at the top left corner or swipe the screen from left to right to open. Scroll down the options to Settings and hit it. Select your Gmail address. Scroll down to Data usage and checkmark Sync Gmail underneath it.
Open your Calendar app. Tap on the 3-line menu at the top right and select Settings. Choose your Gmail address. Check on all the boxes including your email and contacts.
Once all your data are backed up, you can now go ahead setting up your new phone.
If you have your files stored on Google servers, you won't need to worry about losing your phone as you can access and restore the files using a new phone.
