With over two billion users, WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, is the most popular and the most downloaded instant messaging service today. You can use the service to send text and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other content.
One good thing about WhatsApp, which puts it ahead of its rivals, is its ability to backup and restore chats history. With this feature, you don't have to worry about losing memorable conversations, or pictures, videos, or audio sent to you.
If you feel that your chats are very important, then it is essential that you constantly have them backed up. If you don't know how to save your WhatsApp chat history, then consider the simple steps below to learn how you can do so.
How to backup WhatsApp
Before you backup your WhatsApp chats, you need to have an active Google account since your chats will be backed up to Google drive. If you already have an account, then you are good to go.
- Open WhatsApp app.
- Tap 3-dot menu at the top right.
- Select "Settings."
- Tap "Chats."
- Scroll down and tap "Chats backup."
- Under "Google drive settings," tap on "Backup to Google Drive."
- Choose from among the options (Never, Only when I tap Backup, Daily, Weekly, and Monthly) how often you want your chats to be backup.
- Select the account you want to use for backup. If you don't have a Google account connected, tap "Add account" when prompted to login.
- Now go back and tap on "Backup over" to choose whether you want to backup your chats over WiFi or WiFi/Cellular. Mind you, backing up over cellular could result in data charges, which is why it is recommended to use Wi-Fi network for the backup.
- If you want the videos sent to you through WhatsApp to be saved, then go down to the bottom to "Include videos" and toggle the button beside it to on.
- After you've prepared the backup settings, you can now tap on the "Backup" button and the backup process will begin.
Note: If you don't backup your WhatsApp in over a year, it’ll be removed from your Google Drive. Also, whenever you perform a backup, the previous backup will be erased. You will not be able to retrieve them. But you don't have to worry as long as your data is safe on Google Drive.
How to restore your chat history
After you've had your chat history stored on Google Drive backup, you will not have problems restoring them on a new phone when you lose your old one. Even if you uninstall WhatsApp, you will still be able to retrieve your backup.
Be aware that restoring your WhatsApp chat history will require that you use the same phone number and Google account you used to create the backup. If you want to know how to restore your backup on a new device or same one if you uninstalled and reinstalled WhatsApp, follow the steps below.
- Open WhatsApp.
- Verify your number.
- Tap "Restore" when prompted and the app will start retrieving your chats and media from Google Drive.
- After the restoration process is complete, tap "Next" and your chats will be displayed once initialization is complete. WhatsApp will then start restoring your media files. There you have it!
As well know, some conversations, like letters from loved ones, are too precious to lose. We would want to keep them with us as memories that we can go back to later. By having our chat history stored to a safer place, we won't have to worry about losing them. If you have anything add to this post, feel free to express them in the comments section below.
