Baby Shark Has Become YouTube Most-Viewed Video

Baby Shark, the popular children's rhyme performed by the South Korean education company Pinkfong, has becomes YouTube's most-watched video of all time. The song drew 7.04 billion views to surpass the previous record holder Despacito, the Latin pop smash by singer Luis Fonsi.

Baby Shark is a kiddie rhyme song featuring a family of sharks that hunt school of fish which escape to safety. The song is believed to have originated from a campfire song or chant during summer camps in the 1970s. Some sources have mentioned traditional myths as a basis, while others think it was possibly developed by camp counselors inspired by the Steven Spielberg 1975 smash hit Jaws. It became a campfire song where each member of a family of sharks is introduced with different hand motions.

There are different versions of the song that includes having the sharks hunting fish, eating a sailor, or killing people, who then go to heaven. There are also international versions - including the French Bebe Requin and the German Kleiner Hai (Little Shark), which became a minor hit in Europe in 2007.

But the most successful of them all is the Pinkfong's version. The phenomenon of this song's success began when in 2015 the original version of the Baby Shark song was uploaded to YouTube and which was sung by 10-year-old Korean-American singer Hope Segoine.

The next year, Pinkfong put out a second video, titled Baby Shark Dance, featuring two cute kids, Segoine and 9 years old child actress Elaine Johnston, performing the dance routine. The music video went viral in June 2016, and by November 2020, four years after it was uploaded, it became the most popular of all the Baby Shark videos and the most viewed YouTube video of all time with over 7 billion views. Even the related mobile app is among the top 10 most downloaded family app in many Asian countries.

The phenomenal success of Baby Shark netted Pinkfong about $5.2m from YouTube streams alone. Its popularity has already inspired tributes from singers likes of Cardi B, Josh Groban, and the k-pop groups Red Velvet, Girls' Generations and Blackpink. It has spurred an online dance craze (sometimes referred to as Baby Shark Challenge) while being cited as "the next big thing after the domination of Gangnam Style" by k-pop singer Psy.

The song has also been performed protesters who sees it as a symbol of hope such as the anti-government protest in Lebanon during the 2019–20 Lebanese protests.

Baby Shark has appeared in media like films and video games. In 2019 and 2020, the song was featured in The Angry Birds Movie 2 and Rubber and was playable in Just Dance 2020. In 2019, it was announced that Baby Shark would be adapted into a Nickelodeon series set to premiere on Nickelodeon's Nick Jr. block and the Nick Jr. channel in 2020. There is also plan to turn the song into a movie and a musical.
