About 200 Million Phone Numbers and IDs of Facebook Users Discovered Unprotected Online


About 200 million phone numbers and IDs of Facebook members have been discovered in an online database that had been left unprotected.

The online news site TechCrunch who discovered the site reported the issue to the web hosting company leading to its being taken down.

While confirming the news, Facebook says it is investigating who had compiled the database and left it online without password protection. But the answer of how the data was compiled may stem from a tool Facebook was had.

In April 2018, Facebook switched off a feature that let users search for other users by typing in their phone number, because some "malicious actors" were abusing the feature by typing in phone numbers just to find out who owned them. The company said that these abusers have been using this trick for years to harvested people's profiles and phone numbers, and that anybody who had not changed their privacy settings after adding their phone number should assume their data had been harvested.

It is believed in some quarters that this search feature may have been used to compiled the database that is just discovered.
