Opera browser beta version for Android now comes with a free unlimited built-in VPN (virtual private network) feature.
Opera started testing the new built-in VPN feature on its Android browser some days ago, with the aim of providing a secure mobile experience as you browse the web. The new VPN feature does not keep any log of users activity and will help protect their data and privacy from hackers while they browse through public Wi-Fi.
In a blog post, Opera said:
"The reason why we include this built-in VPN in our Android browser is that it gives you that extra layer of protection that you are searching for in your daily mobile browsing."
Before April last year, Opera web browser and Opera VPN used to be two separate apps. And there were two versions of the VPN app, the free Opera VPN and $29.99 Opera VPN Gold, both of which were then shut down. Now a VPN have been added to form a core part of the browser.
With the new feature, Android users will no longer have to download a dedicated VPN app or pay for one to protect their data while they browse. All they would need to do is to enable the feature by tapping on ‘Settings’ on their Opera browser and then selecting a virtual server from a list of options. It would be better to select optimal server, which would automatically find the best server to connect.
As with all VPNs, the Opera VPN will replace your IP address with a virtual IP address through which internet traffic will be directed. This will make it hard for websites or service providers to identify the device you are using or to track your location. Also since Opera isn't keeping any log of your activity, then there is no record of your surfing habits. If you, however, wish to disable the VPN feature from the browser, just head back to ‘settings’ and toggle to disable the VPN option.
The new Opera VPN feature is being gradually rolled out right now for only Android beta users. It's not yet known when Opera will make the feature available to its main mobile browser. But in the meantime, you can try it out by downloading the Opera browser beta app from Google Play Store.
