How to Easily Backup and Restore Your Contacts with MTN Backup

Is your phone or MTN SIM lost or stolen? Are you worried about losing your contacts which have taken you a lot of time to accumulate? Then have no fear, MTN Backup service can help you deal with this.

What is MTN Backup?

MTN Backup is a service that provides MTN subscribers a simple way to keep phone and SIM contacts or data safe and secure in the event that they lost or misplaced their phones or MTN SIM.
All backed up contacts are kept safe in an MTN online account. So if anything happens to your phone or SIM, you can simply restore your data to a new mobile phone or SIM.

But if your handset gets stolen and the person inserts another SIM, you can request Customer Care to block access to your own remote Backup account until you get another SIM and restore your data. This way, no one else will be able to perform a Backup on your account until you ask for the service to be restored.

It's imperative that you call MTN to unblock your line before you will be able to start using the services. Access to the self-care interface will be also blocked until you unblock your line.

When you subscribed to MTN Backup, you will be charged N50 every two weeks as contact storage fee and will receive a complimentary Automatic Backup of your contacts every two weeks.

You can backup up to 200 contacts on your SIM and up to 5000 contacts on your mobile phone.

MTN Backup service is available to all phone types. However, phones running Windows OS can only Backup SIM contacts not phone contacts.

How to subscribe to MTN Backup
To start using MTN Backup service, you need to do either or both of the following:

• Text Start to 307

• Launch a synchronization on your SIM or Handset. Go to the SIM Menu MTN Service available on the MTN 128k SIM.

You should make sure you have a SIM with MTN Backup Menu inside in order to backup the contacts stored on your SIM. If you don't have it, then you will need to buy a new MTN 128k SIM Card with MTN Backup inside.

You don't need to register to start using the service.

For the SIM contacts, you just need to go to the MTN Backup menu and start synchronizing your contacts.

For Handset data, you need to have your handset appropriately configured. Handset configuration will be done manually by following the instructions on the MTN Backup web portal: http://mtnonline.com/mtnbackup

How to backup your contacts on your SIM

The MTN service on your phone can be used to backup your contacts - the option may appear as SIM Service on some handsets.

Using the SIM menu (SIM contacts only), go to the menu options on your handset and locate the MTN Service menu.

Tap on MTN Backup and then select the Backup SIM Contacts option.

You will be asked if you want to proceed with the contact synchronization, select OK and the backup process will then start. If it is successful, you will receive your login/account details.

How much does It Cost?

Automatic Backup happens every 2 weeks (14 days).

New customers using the service for the first time will pay a flat N100 at the beginning and then N50 every 2 weeks for subsequent auto backup.

Existing customers pay just N50 every 2 weeks.

Note: Costs apply regardless of the number of contacts backed up.

You do not need to have enough credit on your phone for MTN Backup to work. The service will charge you for the operation and attempt to retry in the next 15 days to get credit.

How to restore deleted contacts

If you mistakenly delete some contacts or the information of your calendar, notes or tasks from your SIM or phone, you can find them again in the Recycle bin or Deleted items menu of the web interface. To get them back, you will have to select those contacts or data in the view trash bin page and move them back to the On SIM card (for SIM files) or On Mobile (for phone files) list. When next you Backup, they will be able to copy them again in your SIM or handset.

Contacts will not be restored automatically on insertion of Swapped Sim into your phone. Subscribers will need to launch synchronization from sim menu or recover from selfcare.

If you proceed to backup after you have deleted some contacts in your SIM, they will be deleted on the remote library. But they will remain in the Deleted items page of the web interface where you can get them again.

How to unsubscribe to the service
You can unsubscribe from the service by sending UNSUB to 307.

Hope this info helps. For more information on using MTN Backup, check out the FAQs on the web interface. Don't forget to share.
