Google's YouTube will be rolling out a series of new tools that will help users manage their video viewing time.
At the Google I/O conference last week (May 8), the company introduced a number of new controls for YouTube that will enable users to set time limits on their viewing habits. Users will be able to scheduled time periods using a feature called “Take a break” that will notify them to stop watching. The “Take a break” feature can be found at the very top of YouTube’s settings and it is already being rolled out in the latest version of video-sharing mobile app.
With “Take a break,” YouTube users can set a reminder to appear every 15, 30, 60, 90 or 180 minutes, at which point the video will pause for you to either dismiss the reminder and keep watching, or stop watching and close the app. But the setting is optional, and is turned off by default.
Also included will be a “Time watched profile” that you will find in the Account menu. It will display your daily average watch time, along with how long you’ve watched YouTube videos over the past week.
The YouTube settings also include new feature that lets users disable notification sound during a specified time period each day. By default, the setting is set to disable notifications from 10 PM to 8 AM local time, but you can change it to the time you want.
Though these changes in YouTube requires users to opt-in, it helps them recognize the need to manage their sometimes addictive behaviors around technology.
The YouTube new features are currently available in version 13.17 and higher of the YouTube mobile app of both Android and iOS. The “Time watched profile” though, will ship in the “coming months.”
