Android P will Restrict apps from Monitoring Users Network Activity

With Google's new mobile operating system, Android P or version 9.0, soon to arrive, we can expect to see a number of changes. One of these will be restricting apps from accessing users network activity.

Currently, Android allows apps to track users network activity. This helps them to learn all about which sites people visit online, without the people knowing about it and without even asking for their permission. But that is expected to change with the upcoming new Android operating system.

Starting with Android P, Google will deny apps access to users network information by locking down a feature called "proc/net" that currently allows it. No longer will apps be able to monitor internet activity without their knowledge or consent.

VPN apps though are not completely restricted by the new feature from Android P. Their aim is mostly to allow users to route traffic through their servers in order to benefit from the protection of the VPN’s encrypted channel. But they still have to ask users for permission to remove some of the restrictions. It is up to users to decide if they want to, but they need to remember that they are at risk when they enable such apps because those apps can fully monitor their internet connection.
