Russia Bans Telegram App

The Russian government has put a ban on the messaging app, Telegram, for ignoring a court order to give the Federal Security Service (FSB) access to encryption keys. The ban will come into force immediately and will remain in place until Telegram gives the FSB access to encryption keys.
The FSB had claimed that the suicide bomber who attacked St Petersburg Metro was using Telegram. This has led to a round of legal action against Telegram leading to the ban.
Although, Telegram had previously agreed to register with the Russian government as an information distributor, it however drew the line when it comes to giving up encryption keys to the FSB.
Telegram is well-known for offering encrypted messaging services to smartphone users. Their emphasis on user privacy has made it a notorious haven for terrorist groups. It was even featured in how-to guides on avoiding surveillance written by terrorist organizations. There are also reports that Telegram’s servers are being used to store pirated movie and music content.
The Russian government ban is not the first for the Telegram app. In February this year, Apple banned the messaging app from its App Store after it was found to be used for sharing child pornography.
