Google to Fix Android Messaging with its New Chat Messaging Service

It has been reported that Google is aiming to fix Android’s text messaging woes. But unlike previous attempts, the Android makers will focusing on the in-built app and building out features directly into it rather than launching an entirely different service altogether.

The new text messaging initiative will be called Chat. Chat will make use of Rich Communication Services (RCS), which will upgrade the texting experience by including features we are used to in other text messaging apps, such as, read receipts, support for photos and videos, and typing indicators.

However, for the Chat feature to take off, Google would need the support of all Smartphone companies and network carriers to get RCS as the default texting method on Android devices. Currently, 11 smartphone manufacturers and 55 carriers around the world are supporting this feature.

Samsung and Huawei plans on joining in the initiative. Microsoft too is supporting the RCS feature, but the same cannot be said of Apple since its own iMessage service is already offering these features. But Google and other companies are currently in talks with Apple in an effort to get the company to support it.

What do you think of Google’s newest attempt to fix Android text messaging?
