Facebook will be Limiting How it Collects Android Users Call History and SMS Data

Facebook announced that it will be limiting how it collects SMS data and call history from Android users.

Facebook announcement comes on the heels of last month revelation that Facebook has been collecting Android users SMS data and call records for years by using what it calls an “opt-in feature”. The feature was expected to improve its friend recommendation algorithm by requesting access to users contacts, SMS data, and call history on Android phones.

This information only came to light following the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal which shows that it has been obtaining people's personal information, including that of Facebook users.

Facebook says it has reviewed the feature to confirm that it “does not collect the content of messages — and will delete all logs older than one year”. Facebook promise that in the future it will only obtain information that will help the feature.

This is a welcome change since Facebook doesn't need all that info anyway. Let's hope that this change will protect people's personal data on Facebook from the likes of Cambridge Analytica.
