Facebook Adds Video Chat To Messenger Lite

Facebook recently announced that they would be adding video chat on their Messenger Lite app.

Messenger Lite is a lighter version of the original Messenger app that was first launched in 2015. It was created for the sake of mobile users in developing countries, where mobile usage is more costly and people are more likely to use lower-end Android devices.

Being lightweight, the chat app doesn't take time to install and uses less data to operate, since it takes less than 10MB.

With Messenger Lite, you can enjoy the same features found in the basic Messenger, like text messaging, photo and link sharing and stickers. Now video chat has been added to the mix as a quick step away from the main screen.

By adding video chat to Messenger Lite, Facebook shows that they recognize the importance of video chat to mobile users today. Besides video chat has been one of the biggest boon for Facebook in the Messenger app, with over 17 billion video chats on it in just 2017.

“Video chats are an expected and essential part of everyday communication in today’s messaging experience,” says Facebook.

Messenger Lite is available in over 100 countries, with over 100 million downloads to date, particularly in India, Brazil, and Indonesia. But that's little compared to that of its main Messenger app that has about 700 million downloads from the Google Play store.

To enjoy the video chat feature on Messenger Lite app, just tap the video icon in the corner (in messaging) or in the middle of the screen (in a call) to switch to video.
