Google Launches Android Oreo 8.1 Lighter Version To Power Cheap Smartphones

Google has launched a lighter version of its Android Oreo called "Android Oreo Go". This is a data-saving, storage-saving operating system optimized for cheaper smartphones.

The new operating system was first released in India last Tuesday in an attempt to woo millions of basic phone users in the fast-growing mobile market.

This new lightweight version of Oreo can work on any device with a memory as low as 512MB. It contains several features that will apparently help apps to load up to 15% faster and save a lot of data, while still offering all the same security features as that of the newly released Android 8.1.

The features includes performance and storage improvements, a new set of lightweight Google apps and a special version of the Google Play Store that highlights the apps designed to work well on low memory smartphone devices.

India have more than 1.2 billion mobile phone subscribers which makes them the second biggest wireless services market in the world after China. Still, only about a third section of these subscribers currently uses smartphones, leaving a vast market for Google, handset, and telecom firms to further tap.

It is hoped that low-end Smartphone users around the world, including Nigeria, would also benefit from this new initiative from Google.
