Google Is Cracking Down On Apps That Collects Users Data Without Their Consent

Google is taking new measures designed to protect Android users' privacy. Just recently the search engine giant put a ban on apps that display ads on your phone's lock screen which can potentially trick users into downloading unwanted software or sharing data that they don’t want to. Now Google is cracking down on snooping apps that collect users data without their consent. The company will also warn off users from websites that lead to offending apps that violates its policies.

Google's Safe Browsing team unveiled stricter rules on how apps collect a user’s data. Under the new policy, apps that collects and transmits users' data that is unrelated to the functionality of the app must first provide their privacy policy, showing how the data will be used, and ask users for permission to share their data like phone number, email or location.

Interestingly enough, apps downloaded outside of the Play Store are also subject to this policy too. No matter where it comes from, the app must follow the policy or Google Play Protect will show a warning whenever it tries to collect your data without telling you.

Google's efforts seem noble, but will it be enough to protect users' data from hackers and snoopers?
