Google Assistant Is Coming Soon To Older Android Devices


Google's voice-activated virtual helper, Google Assistant, is coming soon to phones running Android 5.0 Lollipop and tablets running Android 7.0 Nougat and 6.0 Marshmallow.

This will certainly be good news for those who have been hoping to benefit from this feature, for Google’s Assistant has only been available on most newer and modern Android devices they have built-in support for the Assistant.

On the other hand, older phones and tablets cannot easily run the Assistant since their Android versions are not baked right into their launcher. So you’ll have to launch the Google Assistant app before you can start it ask for directions, the weather, of any help you need.

Android 5.0 Lollipop has been available since 2014, which makes it an old operating system, since Android 8.1 Oreo is now latest version. But according to Google, more than 26 percent of all Android devices still run some version of Android 5.0 Lollipop. While just over 30 percent run Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Still, with an update to the Google Play Services, even these older devices will now be able to enjoy the benefits that comes with Google Assistant.

Phones running Android 5.0 Lollipop should be expecting the Assistant soon. It’ll only be available to users who set their language to English in the U.S., U.K., India, Australia, Canada and Singapore, as well as to those who have set their default language to Spanish in the U.S., Mexico and Spain.

Google says that users Italy, Japan, Germany, Brazil and Korea will also soon receive the update.

As for Marshmallow and Nougat tablet users, they’ll get the update over the course of the coming week, as long as they are in the U.S. and have set their language to English.
