Etisalat Pulls Out From Nigeria; May Come Up With A New Name In 3 Weeks

Posted by Chris Iteh

The owners of Etisalat has just withdrawn their existing shares from Etisalat Nigeria, one of the leading telecommunications companies in the country.

According to reports, all the UAE shareholders have terminated their agreement and exited the company’s board. The company has also been given up to 3 weeks to desist the use of the brand name "Etisalat".

The beginning of the end?

The embattled company have been embroiled in a lot of crisis due to its messy debts running up to 1.2 billion dollars.

Only just recently, Etisalat Nigeria announced a new board of directors.

Although there have been talks about a new name for Etisalat Nigeria, Emerging Market Telecommunication Services Ltd. (EMS), the company that make use of the brand name, has debunked the reports about any immediate change of name.

EMTS insisted that the company has a valid and subsisting agreement with the Etisalat Group, which entitles it to use the Etisalat brand, notwithstanding the recent changes within the Company.

Presently, discussions are ongoing between EMTS and Etisalat Group concerning the continued use of the brand, and EMTS will issue a formal statement once discussions are concluded.

How it all began

Etisalat’s trouble began in 2013 with its $1.2 billion bank loans. Because of the rising exchange rates which increases the loan interest rates, the company has been unable to repay the debts, plunging it into deep financial mess. As a result, the company’s lenders, 3 Nigerian and 7 foreign banks, took over it.

However, EMTS allay fears that a change in identity may affect their business operations or range of services.

In the company's own words: “EMTS is here to stay and we wish to assure our esteemed customers that our core values of youthfulness, customer-centricity and innovation will remain the pillars on which we operate.”

Well that may seem so for now but what about the future? Only time will tell.
